SUMMARY:Woman Grows Jeans - a What If? Film Club Screening
DESCRIPTION:When an ambitious experiment between a textile activist and a celebrity clothier meets inevitable challenges\, one woman is propelled into an extraordinary journey that makes British fashion history. \nTogether with a community of volunteers\, they set out to create homegrown jeans to be sold through a social enterprise — but the project soon exposes difficult truths about the systems controlling the fashion industry. Despite its sophistication\, the UK can no longer produce clothing without importing materials or causing environmental harm. \nIn a country that buys 70 million pairs of jeans each year\, Woman Grows Jeans journeys into our resilient ancestry to reclaim the care\, connection and agency at the heart of regeneration. What unfolds is a tender and radical act of reconnection: to land\, lineage and the almost-lost skills of the more-than-human world. \nAfter 600 hours of work\, the UK’s only pair of homegrown jeans were handmade — not as a relic of the past\, but as a signpost towards a different future. \nA celebration of traditional skills\, creativity and the wisdom of the natural world\, Woman Grows Jeans is an uplifting and thought-provoking film about what it really means to rewild our world\, our wardrobes and ourselves. \nFollowing the screening\, we’ll be joined online for a Q&A with filmmaker and artist Justine Aldersey-Williams. \nAs with all What If? Film Club screenings\, the evening will be relaxed and welcoming:\nFree tea\, coffee\, soft drinks and home baking – if you have any special dietary needs\, please drop us an email before the event so we can make sure there’s something you can enjoy too\nTime to talk and reflect together\nA gentle post-film activity to help us think about how the ideas in the film might help us shape a different relationship to what we wear \nRunning time: 50 minutes\nClassification: PG

SUMMARY:Picnic Prom & Garden Open Day at Barwhillanty Estate
DESCRIPTION:Barwhillanty Estate will host its third annual Garden Open Day and Picnic Prom\, on Saturday 13 June 2026\, culminating in a 1pm recital performed by Blackbird Opera\, in the newly refurbished Walled Garden. The event forms part of the 47th Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival\, presented in partnership with Arts D&G. \nSet against the backdrop of the Galloway Hills\, the event invites audiences to enjoy an afternoon where music\, landscape and relaxed summer dining meet. Visitors are welcome to explore the gardens from 11am\, bringing their own picnic or reserving one of Barwhillanty’s wood-fired pizzas in advance. Tea\, coffee and ice cream will also be available on site. We kindly ask that you support us by purchasing drinks from our new bar\, instead of bringing your own. \nAt the heart of the afternoon is a recital featuring local soprano Claudia Wood\, joined this year by soprano Rachael Brimley\, with celebrated Scottish pianist and Scottish Opera’s former Head of Music Derek Clark\, at the piano. Together they will present a programme that moves effortlessly through the lyricism\, drama and sparkle of the operatic repertoire\, drawing on beloved works from the classical canon of opera and song. Audiences can expect an engaging and accessible journey through music that celebrates the expressive richness of the human voice. \nTickets are available on the Barwhillanty Estate website

SUMMARY:TOWA MURA BY TOM POW / The Galloway Agreement & Bird Theatre
DESCRIPTION:‘There is a deep forest surrounding the valley where Towa Mura stands. \nIt is almost autumn – blossom time has passed and winter will not be long in arriving.’Towa Mura is a profound international collaboration between writer Tom Pow\, the musicians of The Galloway Agreement from South West Scotland\, and the acclaimed Bird Theatre from Tottori\, Japan. \nDrawing on shared experiences of rural life and depopulation\, the work intertwines poetry\, theatre\, and music to tell a local and universal story. \nSet in an imagined village\, Towa Mura is an evocative exploration of social cohesion\, rural life & what is being lost from rural communities. \nThe play presents ‘an argument’\, one that is carried by memory\, myth and imagination as well as by the dilemmas an ageing rural population faces as it chooses its fate. \nThe play is a rich combination of Scottish and Japanese culture\, combining Tom Pow’s poetic writing\, Makoto Nakashima’s direction (Bird Theatre)\, three Japanese and one Scottish actor (Bird Theatre / Matthew Zajac)\, and the five musicians of The Galloway Agreement: Wendy Stewart (clarsach\, vocals)\, Ruth Morris (nyckelharpa)\, Gavin Marwick (fiddle)\, Stuart Macpherson (double bass)\, and Beth Porter (cello\, vocals\, ukulele). \nBird Theatre operates in a rural context in Japan’s least populated prefecture\, a place which has many parallels with rural D&G. \nIt faces the same challenges\, the same reasons people choose to stay\, leave\, or arrive. \nBased on Tom Pow’s research extending over ten years\, Towa Mura looks at the dilemmas communities face\, the human impact of rural depopulation and the decline of communities. \nTowa Mura is performed in English and Japanese with surtitle captions. \nThe 2pm performance will be fully captioned\, 7:30pm Japanese to English Translations. \nOrganisers: Bird Theatre\, Ruth Morris\, Peter Renwick- CatStrand. \nCo-Organiser: The Japan Foundation Co-Production: Bird Theatre\, Ruth Morris\, Peter Renwick- CatStrand\, The Japan Foundation Supported by The Japan Foundation\, Creative Scotland\, British Council\, and the Great Britain Sasakawa FoundationOriginal Script: Tom PowOriginal Score: The Galloway Agreement Director: Makoto Nakashima (Bird Theatre)Dramaturg: Matthew Zajac (Dogstar)Lighting design: tba (Bird Theatre)Actors: Matthew Zajac (Dogstar); Rena Nakagawa\, Maya Yasuda & Hiroshi Kosuge (Bird Theatre) Producers: Ruth Morris\, Peter Renwick (CatStrand) & Sachiko Nishio (arts knot)Producer/translator: Nao Miyauchi (arts knot)Musicians: The Galloway Agreement – Ruth Morris\, Gavin Marwick\, Wendy Stewart\, Stuart Macpherson & Beth PorterLighting tech & Stage Manager: Alberto Santos BellidoSound tech: tba (Bird Theatre)Kakashi Puppets made by Alex Rigg (Oceanallover)Video: Emma DovePresented as part of the Dumfries & Galloway Arts FestivalImage (C) Ian Biggar
