SUMMARY:Hand-Held Journeys: A workshop with Jim Bucchanan
DESCRIPTION:Hand-Held Journeys’ transpose the classical labyrinth form around a sphere. \nThis allows the labyrinth’s metaphors for life’s journeys and pilgrimage\, to be placed within the palm of your hand. \nArtist Jim Buchanan works particularly with the classical labyrinth forms\, which date back some 5\,000 years. \nOriginally created as carved symbols\, later finding use during the early Middle Ages as walk through patterns\, laid into cathedral floors or cut turf village greens. \nJim’s primary interest as an artist is exploring the relationship between the cyclical rhythms found in Nature\, with that of human movement\, either by walking\, haptic or visual senses. \nThe addition of an oculus through the sphere links the ‘start’ and ‘goal’ of the labyrinth pattern\, and offers potentially continuous momentum – the ‘eternal’. \nThe cadence of moving through the labyrinth can stimulate emotional changes within the walker\, and this understanding of ‘how we move can effect how we feel’ underpins Jim’s new work in healthcare. \nCarving clay reveals internal sculptural forms\, and adding back material allows us to build new pathways and labyrinthine walls. \nAs the clay is from the earth\, it represents the planet and our bodies. \nThe oculus then allows us to see inside to contemplate the internal and the eternal. \nJim will guide you through the forming of your own labyrinth ball\, with materials and tools provided. \nThe air drying clay can set solid within a few days of the workshop.

SUMMARY:BRUCE KEITH: THE GALLOWAY HYDRO-ELECTRIC-SCHEME / Galloway Conversations & Glenkens Story
DESCRIPTION:The Galloway Hydro-Electric Scheme – Bruce Keith guides us in celebration of 90 years of renewable energy generation. \nMeet the innovators who moulded a landscape to harness the water resource\, bringing power to Glenkens. \nIn Scotland’s rich heritage in hydro-electricity\, Galloway was the pioneer – when it opened in 1936 it was one of the first in a new generation of major civil engineering infrastructure projects which heralded landmark renewable energy schemes. \nMoreover\, it’s still going strong today! \nWith a capacity to generate 110 megawatts of total peak power\, it makes a substantial contribution to Scotland’s goal of Net Zero and the challenges of climate change. \nNever were the innovative and creative minds of a century ago so relevant to the nation’s future. \nBruce Keith brings this important episode in the Glenkens story to life in his illustrated talk on the politicians\, industrialists\, entrepreneurs\, civil and electrical engineers\, and architects – many home-grown Scots – whose innovation and endeavour brought the Galloway Hydro-Electric Scheme to fruition. \nNot forgetting\, of course\, the diligent and strenuous efforts of over 1\,300 workers who\, across the 400 square miles of river catchments\, constructed 5 generating stations (Drumjohn was added in 1985)\, the 11 dams and 8 miles of pipelines\, canals\, aqueducts and tunnels – the Glenlee tunnel is 3.6 miles long and 6 inches wider than the Glasgow Underground – together with a massive barrage gate\, to create one of the wonders of the modern age. \nAnd it was completed on time and on budget – how’s that for project management?
