SUMMARY:Measuring by Eye Workshop with Elizabeth Gilbey
DESCRIPTION:Topic of workshop\nIn this workshop\, we will explore drawing techniques aimed at improving accuracy and the ability to handle complexity through simplification. \nWhat we will do\nWe will examine how well we can measure by eye. We will look at finding a point of view; the use of one shape to represent a whole composition\, use mass drawing techniques as well as line drawing methods. We will try both fast and slow methods of capturing reality. \nIn the morning\, Elizabeth will demonstrate some of the ideas we will put into practice. We will work through a series of short drawing exercises to hone skills and see how the various techniques work for you. We will look at still life groups including some more complex subjects. \nIn the afternoon\, there will be the opportunity to explore these techniques further through a variety of exercises\, so everyone tries something new. We will take the final drawing to a more finished stage as time allows. \nAt the end of the workshop\nYou will come away with some methods to grapple with more complex drawing challenges. These ideas will broaden your understanding of how to create lifelike drawings from reality. A good grasp of drawing is the basis of all two-dimensional work whether going into realism or abstraction. \nWho is it for\nThe workshop is suitable for all levels of experience – if you are just beginning\, and would like to learn these useful skills or if you are a more experienced artist who would like to refresh your drawing techniques. \nRecommended Medium\nWe will work in dry media\, mainly charcoal and soft pencil. Pastels in a limited range of colours or just one colour in a variety of tones/values. You will need thick charcoal/pastel or very soft pencil to make mass technique drawings. \nWhat to bring \nSome of the following:\n• A large pad of paper with “tooth”\, that is rough not smooth.\n• A box of charcoal in various thicknesses. A piece of real chamois leather and a putty eraser. If you have it\, powder charcoal and small sponge.\n• A box of pencils\, mainly soft.\n• A selection of soft pastels in a limited colours/monochrome. \nA full materials/equipment/references check list will be sent to you by the tutor on booking. \nThe workshop is organised by Dumfries and Galloway Fine Arts Society \nCost £35 members / £65 non members
