SUMMARY:Folklore and Tradition at Christmas
DESCRIPTION:The December Lecture from The Arts Society Dumfries and Galloway (TASDAG) will highlight the many customs and traditions which go into making the festive season truly festive. Alongside all the traditional and beloved aspects of Christmas\, there is a fascinating history to so much of what the season means across the world. From the mischief-making trolls and scary demons of folklore\, to the goodwill and gift-giving of more cosily familiar customs.\nSome of the most fascinating Christmas traditions from Iceland\, the Netherlands\, Sweden\, Austria and elsewhere……will be brought to life; illustrated with paintings and engravings in this seasonally themed Lecture. \nThe Arts Society is delighted to host Guest Lecturer\, Tim Stimson\, who will draw on his extensive knowledge of literature and the history of art to bring this topical subject to life.\nTim’s involvement in art is based on his many years as a professional painter and ceramicist in Scotland and Wales. For the last 20 years Tim has been a freelance cultural art historian\, specialising in 17th and 19th century art and society. \nThe monthly TASDAG Lectures take place on the second Tuesday of the month\, and the Folklore and Tradition at Christmas Lecture is on December 9th\, 2025 at 11.00am in the Gilchrist Room\, Easterbrook Hall\, The Crichton\, DG1 4TA (Coffee and Tea from 10.30am)\nMore information about lectures\, events and membership is available from\nwww.tasdag.org.uk
