Explore Closeburn Castle by night — a place we know and love, steeped in haunting atmosphere..

The ancestral seat of Clan Kirkpatrick, Closeburn Castle is one of the oldest continuously inhabited tower houses in Scotland. Mostly Ghostly brings a uniquely intimate perspective — shaped by years of research and a long-standing partnership with the castle, dating back to 2018.

Over time, a number of compelling stories have arisen: sightings of a woman in black, reports of a shadowy canine presence, and tales of a mysterious death omen — each one woven into the castle’s rich tapestry of folklore.

Over the course of the evening, guests will take part in a series of group sessions using traditional ghost-hunting techniques — including dowsing rods, pendulums, mirror work, trigger objects, and basic audio recording. Each session is shaped by the castle’s history and stories, giving guests the chance to observe, explore, and discuss what they encounter.

You’ll also:
Explore atmospheric spaces including the dungeon, tower stair, attic room, and reception area
Spend time outdoors (weather permitting) near the loch and through the surrounding woodland
Consider the historic iron yett — a powerful liminal feature and symbol of transition

There will be breaks for refreshments, time to reflect and compare insights, and a closing group vigil in one of the house’s most resonant spaces. With limited places available, this is an exciting opportunity to experience Closeburn Castle after hours and engage with its stories in a small-group setting.
