Burns and the Scottish Enlightenment: Reflections on the 250th Anniversary of America’s Birth
Tue 4 August @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

As the United States marks the 250th anniversary of its founding, join writer, Global Scot and Ellisland trustee Ian Houston for a thought-provoking exploration of the connections between Robert Burns, the Scottish Enlightenment, and the birth of modern America.
Drawing on history, literature and personal reflection, Ian will examine how the ideas that shaped Burns’s world—liberty, equality, democracy and human dignity—also influenced the emerging American republic. The talk will consider Burns’s own views on revolution and freedom, the transatlantic exchange of Enlightenment ideas, and the enduring relevance of Burns’s writing in America today.
Following the presentation, guests will have the opportunity to take part in an informal discussion exploring Burns’s continuing international legacy.
Refreshments will be provided.
Tickets by donation. Booking required.
